AHT's are a very healthy breed but there are some specific guidelines that help keep your dog healthy.
1. Skin care- Healthy skin should be soft and neither dry nor oily. There is a extremely small amount of hair called "vellus", that is practically microscopic. On some dogs, it feels like suede. Because they have no protection against the elements, it is important to protect their skin. In sunny weather use sunscreen. I prefer those made for children as they are milder. I prefer to also use joggers that made of 40 spf material for extended time outside. In cold weather, my dogs wear fleece or flannel joggers. My friend, Randi Ross, makes wonderful clothing for AHT's at very affordable pricing for the quality. Her website is: http://imageevent.com/rjross/joggers
Bathing varies with individual dogs and activity level, but I like to rinse my dogs off about once a week with a mild soap made for dogs. Every 2 weeks to a month, I will use a homemade sugar scrub of olive oil and sugar or another quality oil mixed with sugar to exfoliate the skin. I also like coconut and argan oil.
For skin irritations, first try drops of lavendar oil mixed in with another oil such as safflower, coconut, or argan. Applying a few times a day. If irritation is severe or pus filled bumps appear, consult a Veterinarian. It could be an allergic reaction.
2. Nail care- trim nails weekly. A dremel or clippers work but just make sure to stay on a schedule so that nails do not get too long.
